I didnot realize the depth of this sad song by KLS until recently
when a loved one passed away . In my twenties I altogether
didnot like this song and considered an utterly useless composition ,
but these days when I am matured I find this song in every respect
is one of the greatest saddest songs ever composed .

The music director had just brought out the feelings with a single
piece of sarangi in the interlude . Great composers and
great singers . BTW - is this the saddest song rendered by KLS ?

And when you were in your twenties, this song was probably rightfully
useless for you. That is not the age to be burdened by sad thoughts. Indeed
very engaging song under the circumstances you faced recently. Another song
that evokes similar emotions is sung by Mukesh in film chhoTii chhoTii
baate.n (1965), lyrics by Shailendra and music by Anil Biswas. The mukhaDaa
of that song is as follows -

zi.ndagii Kvaab hai, thaa hame.n bhii pataa
par hame.n zi.ndagii se bahut pyaar thaa

Thanks for your response . I am in my mid forties .
Some sad songs which really touched my heart were .
1. jab dil hi toot gaya
2. chah barbad karegi
3. teri duniya me dil lagta nahi
but , the song under reference probably had the greatest
depth and really moved me .

Warm regards ,

Two top picks in this category for me - female voice and male voice:

1. jalke dil khaaq hua aankhon se royaa na gayaa (Lata, Parichay, MD
Shailesh)
2. kahaan tak jafaa husnvaalon ki sahate (Mukesh, Tohfa, MD M A Rauf)

#1 defies verbalization.

Sad songs AYE -KATIBE -TAQDEER MUJHE ITNA BATA DE from 1944 film
Meri BEHEN leads the list and I do not wish even my enemy to
realise the ful depth of its sadness. Unfortunately its picturisation
in the movie was disapointing. mlk

Meaning, I can't find enough words to describe it. Although I did try
once, in ATMJH:

There are three sad songs that touch me the most

1. Kadam chale aage
2. Karun kya aas niras bhayi (though I was disappointed to see Saigal
singing this song with a smile on the screen!)

and probabily the greatest for me is 'Babul mora naihar chooto jaaye'.
The effect of this song robs me of eloquence. I must be revisiting this
song atleast 2-3 times in a week.

For me it is definitely the Kishore-Shailendra classic - "Jin Raaton Ki
Bhor Nahin Hai Aaj Aisi Hi Raat Aayi" from the film "Door Gagan Ki
Chhaon Mein"

Writing about this song is a very difficult thing for me.

My enrtry for a truly sad song would be "Kahaan tak hum uthaye gham,
jiyen ab ya ki mar jayen" by Lata for Kamini Kaushal in the film AARZU.

Actually, the thread is about the saddest song of KLS only. See

Since most have already mentioned their non - kls sad songs, let me
also mention my favorite which never fails to move me. It is 'Haaye
Jiya Roye..' from Milan (1958), MD Hansraj Behl.

I believe the correct description for the genre of this song is
"hortatory" - not "sad".

That explains why KLS sang the song with a smile.
IIRC Kalyan K wrote an eloquent post on this song on RMIM.
This 'split-personality' song has KLS arguing the case against
despondency, ending the song with the exhortation
"kaho na aas niraas bha_ii"

God, why do you need the feel to indulge the "weeper" inside
you 2-3 times in a week? Great song, sure. But even more
surely, life has joys to offer that you can indulge yourself
with! (T firmly in C)

LOL. Touche!

Actually, it's good practice. Expend all this weepy energy through
music and then spend your real time with a smile :)

Though I'm not an avid consumer of sad songs and prefer peppy ones but
sporadically the ones below offer a good release for pent up
melancholy-

1. Mera sunder sapna beet gaya- Geeta Dutt- Do Bhai(1947). The
depiction of a change from a blissful state to a sad one kindles quite
a few suppressed feelings.

2. Kahan Ho Tum Saheliyon- Noor Jehan- Hamraaz(1967). The whole feel of
being relentlessly alone on your birthday and enraged cries calling old
friends but meeting dead end, the chorus of haunting voices sending a
chill down the spine surly for me is the imago of sadness.

3. Ghabra Ke Jo Hum- Raj Kumari- Mahal(1949). Life seems fraught with
extreme pain as one looks forward to embrace death. The pain is
vehement yet subtle and the struggle is to feel it.

4. Aansoo Bhari Hain Yeh Jeevan Ki Rahen- Mukesh- Parvarish(1958).
